Design as Process, Process as Design

Design as Process, Process as Design is a series of generative audio-visual works. The works are created by a set of programatic rules which generate color patterns and audio tones while simultaneously processing them through feedback buffers. After the initial parameters are set, the process is unsupervised and becomes self-organising growing autonomously. The outcome of this process is unpredictable.

242.pilots is a collaborative composed of three video artists and a revolving set of musicians. Using their own custom software, 242.pilots improvise rich, layered video works in real-time (both as a group and as individuals). Improvising as a group, the members respond and interact with each others images in a subtle and intuitive way, images are layered, contrasted, merged, and transformed.

The interplay and unspoken communication between the artists is akin to a free jazz ensemble. The end product is a visual conversation: a quasi-narrative exploring degrees of abstraction; a mesmerizing immersive journey through diverse landscapes.

The New York Times praised 242.pilots as "A compelling, intruiging alliance of sound and motion".

Since their inception in 2001, 242.pilots have performed at museums, galleries and theaters throughout Europe, Canada, and USA including the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Mutek, Impakt Festival in Utrecht, NL, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao .

Live in Bruxelles DVD

The 242.pilots DVD "Live in Bruxelles" received the Image Award at Transmediale.03 International Media Art Festival in Berlin, February 2003.

Agents of Seed Dispersal

Video still of drilling into pavement Plant growing through pavement Hand releasing a ballon

The Agents project is designed to address the rapid degradation of the Earth's environment. The project focuses on reversing the unrelenting spread of asphalt and its suffocation of the natural environment. Agents proposes that the built environment is an ecosystem not an artificial territory disconnected from Earth and Nature. Conceptualizing the metropolis as an ecosystem requires its occupants to address it as a natural system with environmental thought and action.

The Agents of Seed Dispersal project consists of two separate but corresponding actions.

Animal - Zoochary propagation: the dispersal of seeds by animals.

The first action is an intervention in the urban space of post-industrial asphalt lots in which the author, as the agent of intervention, bores through their surface in order to reach the underlying earth. The penetration is intended to allow the asphyxiated earth below the barren surface to breath, and to be an opening for plant life to take root. The revived plant life in return slowly mends the underlying stifled soil and over time deterritorializes the barren asphalt by reterritorializing into a space of (green) growth.

Wind - Anemonochory propagation: the dispersal of seeds by wind.

The second action is the deployment of seed dispersing ballons over the built environment. The ballons allow seeds to be diseminated across a wide range and into areas which are restricted to public access. The released seeds embed themselves into the cracks and gaps of the urban environment in order to take root and redefine the urban environment.
